Hundreds of female students abducted by gunmen in Nigeria

Gunmen have abducted 317 schoolgirls in the northwestern Nigerian state of Zamfara.

According to the foreign news agency, armed men stormed a school in the Nigerian state of Zamfara and abducted female students.

Reports say the abducted girls were students at Government Girls Science Secondary School, the second-largest kidnapping in the area in large numbers.

As soon as the incident was reported, the police and army launched a joint search and rescue operation.

On the other hand, the United Nations has also appealed for the release of female students.

Cases of kidnapping for ransom by armed local criminal gangs have increased in central and northwestern Nigeria in recent years.

Last December, 300 boys were abducted from a school in Nigerian President Bohari's hometown of Kunkara and later released.
